Private Sector Unions
Union members know that if their demands are unreasonable they could cause the financial collapse of their employer. Managers know that if they give too much to the unions the business may not survive. Each side has a survival instinct to address.
Government Employee Unions
Union members know that no matter what sort of grand contract they negotiate, their employer, the government, will be able to pay the tab. This is because government doesn't have to make a profit to operate. Government only needs the power to seize money from the taxpayers. Likewise, government leaders know that they can give the unions almost any concession because of their ability to seize the needed funds through taxation. There's one more advantage for government employee unions: They participate in the process of choosing the very politicians they're going to negotiate for more wages and benefits. Sweeeeeeet.

The gigantic deficits the Administration is projecting are appalling, and they provide a chilling look at our future: America is hurtling towards a fiscal trap that is forcing us into the only option we'll have to restore budgetary sanity: A Value-Added Tax.
Unfortunately, no one really wants to address it. Nancy Pelosi has spoken admiringly of a VAT, and on the Right, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee wants the levy to replace the income tax. But so far, it's mainly a favorite of a cadre of economists at universities and think tanks. White House budget chief Peter Orszag recently dismissed it as an idea that's "popular with academics but not seriously considered by policy makers."
But it's never gotten much support in the U.S. for two reasons. First, it's a regressive tax: Low-earning families pay a bigger portion of their incomes than the wealthy. And second, the VAT -- first introduced by a French civil servant in 1954 -- has fueled the rapid growth of government in France, Germany, and even Japan. In fact, no other country spends the kind of money we're planning to spend without a VAT.

A listener sent me this letter to the editor that appeared in a Jackson, Mississippi newspaper. We have confirmed, via Snopes, that the letter is true. It's a quick read, but it gets right to the point.
Dear Sirs:Hey, Dr. Jones. Soon you will be working for the government and it will be all good.
"During my last night's shift in the ER, I had the pleasure of evaluating a patient with an expensive shiny gold tooth, multiple elaborate expensive tattoos, a very expensive brand of tennis shoes and a new cellular telephone equipped with her favorite R&B tune for a ringtone.. Glancing over the chart, one could not help noticing her payer status: Medicaid. She smokes more than one costly pack of cigarettes every day and, somehow, still has money to buy beer.
And our Congress expects me to pay for this woman's healthcare? Our nation's healthcare crisis is not a shortage of quality hospitals, doctors or nurses. It is a crisis of culture ˜ a culture in which it is perfectly acceptable to spend money on vices while refusing to take care of one's self or, heaven forbid, purchase health insurance. A culture that thinks "I can do whatever I want to because someone else will always take care of me". Life is really not that hard. Most of us reap what we sow. Don't you agree?

Den egna tolkningen av den islamiska lagen, sharia, som baseras på Koranen och tolkningarna av Koranen, tar som regel över annan lagstiftning. Offentliga avrättningar och kroppsstraff förekommer. Under 2007 avrättades fler personer än någonsin förr."
Jemen: "Islam är statsreligion och i stort sett alla medborgare är muslimer... Konstitutionen föreskriver religionsfrihet, men konvertering från islam är strikt förbjuden och är belagd med dödsstraff."
Iran (21 sidor): "Kränkningarna av de mänskliga rättigheterna i Iran är omfattande och förefaller öka. En klar försämring har skett de senaste åren, särskilt vad beträffar yttrandefrihet, verkställande av dödsstraff, ökad förföljelse av intellektuella, studenter och oliktänkande samt tortyr i fängelser. Irans etniska och religiösa minoriteter fortsätter att diskrimineras. Landet lever inte upp till kraven på en rättsstat. I många fall baseras domarna på sharia-lagarna och fatwas från ledande religiösa uttolkare av Koranen vilket skapar inkonsekvens, osäkerhet och sammanblandning av rättskällor."
Qatar: "Att konvertera från islam är formellt belagt med dödsstraff."
Syrien: "Shariarätten verkar diskriminerande mot kvinnor på en rad områden. Det går dock bra för en person att konvertera till islam men inte tvärtom."
Tunisien: "Islam är statsreligion. Landets stormufti, det vill säga den högste rättslärde och uttolkaren av lagen, utses av presidenten. Presidenten måste enligt författningen vara muslim... Ingen systematisk värvning till andra religioner än islam får förekomma."
Malaysia: "Islam är statsreligion men det står icke-muslimer fritt att utöva andra religioner... Det är i praktiken omöjligt för en muslim att byta religion... Icke-muslimer får inte aktivt verka för att omvända muslimer. Muslimer får dock verka för omvändelse till islam bland icke-muslimer. Det händer att shariadomstolar förklarar en person för "avfälling". För detta kan personen dömas till rehabilitering och böter. Men det innebär inte

Bangladesh: "Islam är statsreligion, men konstitutionen garanterar religionsfrihet. Islam spelar en dominerande roll i samhället och statsmakterna är känsliga i frågor som skulle kunna uppröra landets muslimska majoritet... Förföljelser av religiösa minoriteter förekommer."
Pakistan: "Situationen för de mänskliga rättigheterna i Pakistan har förvärrats under 2007. Liksom tidigare är bristande rättssäkerhet, godtycklig myndighetsutövning och diskriminering av kvinnor och minoriteter vanligt förekommande i det pakistanska samhället. Tortyr förekommer och dödsstraff tillämpas... Kristna pakistanier diskrimineras ofta på arbetsmarknaden och lever ofta under svåra förhållanden... Ett godtyckligt och informellt system av rättskipning baserad på islamisk rätt och stamtraditioner tillämpas i de olika stamområdena."
Exemplen kan mångfaldigas.
Att en kristen forskare som Kristian Steiner blundar för det uppenbara förtrycket av kristna minoriteter i islam-dominerade länder kan tyckas förvånande. Men han är inte ensom om att se mellan fingrarna när det gäller frånvaron av demokrati, religionsfrihet, kvinnors rättigheter och yttrandefrihet i länder som domineras av islam. Även vänsterpolitiker och feminister tycks bara beredda till samma sak.
Devrim Mavi, redaktionsmedlem i Dagens Arena, skrev i april i år om det faktum att vänstern i västvärlden valt att närma sig islamister:
"Det är dags för vänstern att börja bevärdiga muslimer med samma krav som ställs på ickemuslimer. Det går inte att vara feminist i Sverige men förhandla bort feminismen när det kommer till Hamas för att de kallar sig för och blir betraktade av många som en befrielserörelse."
När försvaret av mänskliga rättigheter i muslimska länder beskrivs som islamofobi, och när de som framför kritik mot islam framställs som Sverigedemokrater, gynnas enbart högerpopulismen.
Den undfallenhet som delar av det politiska etablissemanget uppvisar gentemot islam, spelar enbart Sverigedemokraterna (SD) i händerna, vilket är djupt tragiskt. Det går självklart alldeles utmärkt att ha en kritisk inställning till islams ideologi och samtidigt förespråka en human svensk flyktingpolitik och hävda muslimers rätt att inte bli diskriminerade i det svenska samhället.
